Howe Park Shooting Results in Multiple Gunshot Victims in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade

Officials in Sacramento County are looking into a shooting incident that erupted Saturday evening at Howe Park in Sacramento as law enforcement were clearing a large unauthorized gathering of an estimated several hundred individuals.

What Led to the Shooting

Deputies initially responded to Howe Park just after 6:30 Saturday evening after being notified of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Not long after, a second call came in describing a reported physical confrontation breaking out at the location.

Aerial units scanned the area from the air but could not confirm any ongoing fight. Despite this, it became clear that several hundred individuals had come together at the location without permission.

The Dispersal and Shooting

Deputies started clearing the unauthorized gathering by setting up around the park's perimeter and making announcements directing the assembled crowd to vacate the area. Around 15 minutes were allotted for people to comply.

It was during this dispersal that 20 to 25 rounds of ammunition cut through the air. The sudden gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Deputies immediately began locating gunshot victims.

Four Gunshot Victims

In total, four people were found to have been shot. Those injured — including a female and three males each reported to be in their 20s — were taken to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Doctors and nurses confirmed that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. Fortunately, all four were expected to survive.

Sacramento Metro Fire arrived on scene and helped care for the four victims on location.

What Investigators Found

The bulk of the shooting was believed to have occurred adjacent to the Cottage Way corridor adjacent to the local Home Depot situated at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Crime scene investigators recovered extra shell casings on Cottage Way. Bullet holes were noted in the iron fence bordering the Home Depot store. These discoveries indicated that a shooter had been sending rounds south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot. The store itself was secured under a brief lockdown for a Cottage Way shooting Sacramento period of time. CSI investigators and detectives remained on scene late into the evening.

Arrests Made

Information relayed over police scanner frequencies indicated that a Kia was intercepted in an area within Solano County. Four detainees were taken into custody. Sheriff's units were dispatched to Solano County to pick up those detained for investigation. Footage analyzed by investigators revealed that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
